Calf and Ankle Liposuction
Who is a candidate for calf and ankle liposuction?
Anyone who has a concern about thickness in their calves and ankles from fatty tissue may be a candidate for this procedure. Thickness in the lower leg can be a concern for many people as the transition from the calf to ankle becomes less clear due to fatty deposits. The slang word “cankles” has been used to describe the blurring of the transition from the calves to the ankles. This contour deformity can be corrected by performing tumescent liposuction on the area in a careful and precise manner to restore the natural contours to the lower leg. We prefer that our patients be in good general health. We find that smokers tend not to heal as well as non-smokers. Heavy alcohol intake is a contraindication to the surgery. Patients should not have edema or ankle swelling since that is a fluid retention problem and is best treated by a general medical practitioner.
How is this liposuction procedure performed?
Calf and ankle liposuction are performed at Atlanta Liposuction Specialty Clinic under local tumescent anesthesia. The procedure involves using small punctures in the skin to introduce small cannulas to extract the excess fat. The SmartLipo laser is often used to improve the contours of the calf. This technique is minimally invasive and allows the surgeon to position the lower leg in the precise positions necessary to achieve optimal results. If the patient is under general anesthesia, the rotation of the lower leg becomes much more difficult, potentially compromising the final result.
What is the recovery time after the procedure?
Most patients experience some discomfort after the procedure for 2-5 days. It is recommended that you rest for 1-2 days after the procedure. You will be wearing a compression garment and that will help with the discomfort. Most patients can return to work in 3-4 days. If you are on your feet all day, you may want to take more time off to facilitate proper healing and decrease lower leg swelling.
What kind of results can I expect from the procedure?
Most of our patients experience a reshaping of their lower calf and ankle region that gives them confidence to go out and not feel as self-conscious about the appearance of their lower legs. It sometimes takes 2-3 months for the final results to become fully evident.
What is the average cost of the procedure?
The procedure costs vary depending on the amount of fat that needs to be removed and the size of the patient. The beginning cost for the calf and ankle liposuction procedure is $4600. Use of the SmartLipo laser in this region also provides the patient with a more defined and sculpted look.
What are the risks associated with the procedure?
Like all operative procedures there is a risk of infection. But at our facility we have a very low infection rate well below 1%. Contour irregularities can also occur when doing the procedure, but at Atlanta Liposuction we are very precise with the placement of our entry ports and pay close attention to the vascular structures in the ankle and calf region. Adherence to this method has given us good and consistent results for our patients.
