Mentoplasty: everything you need to know

Mentoplasty , also known as chin plastic surgery , is an aesthetic medicine operation whose main objective is to modify the volume and protrusion of the chin, making the features of the oval harmonious and symmetrical. Together with cheiloplasty , rhinoplasty and malaroplasty , which respectively improve the appearance of the mouth, nose and cheekbones, mentoplasty is one of the most used surgical techniques for face shaping ( profiloplasty ).

Reductive and additive mentoplasty

Mentoplasty is a type of non-invasive cosmetic surgery that corrects dysmorphic changes in the chin related to the development of the mandibular bone and the masseter muscle used for chewing. The mandibular bone, in terms of evolution, can undergo an excessive (prognathism) or reductive (mandibular enognatism) process in the individual. Both the protrusion of the mandible with respect to the maxilla and the short mandibular base are responsible for numerous disorders, including dental malocclusion and its consequences. Mentoplasty is decisive and returns a result on a functional and aesthetic level. On the basis of the needs, however, in the phase of additive mentoplasty, a further intervention may be useful, reserved for the work of the orthodontist dentist and maxillofacial surgeon. Through the reductive mentoplasty , irreversible from the surgical point of view, we intervene directly on the bone and in some cases on the hypertonic masticatory muscles. Specifically, the excess bone surface is removed. Through additive mentoplasty , on the other hand, a silicone prosthesis (alloplastic implants) is inserted, which can be molded according to individual needs; the main objective of this type of surgery is to increase the size of the chin, the projection and, if necessary, the width. Mentoplasty: when to do it and why

Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure that is not technically complex, but subject to possible complications. The success of the execution is given by the professionalism of the specialist, expert in plastic surgery, by the patient's health conditions and by the positive course of the intervention. The operation, after a pre-operative visit, is performed in an authorized facility, in a day-hospital regime and under local anesthesia with sedation. It can usually be done once you are over the age of majority, when the development of bone tissue has come to an end. The conditions necessary to be able to perform mentoplasty concern the deformities of the face caused by the disproportionate shapes and dimensions of the chin, which can be protruding, blunt, small, backward or angular: based on the cosmetic defect , an additive or reductive mentoplasty intervention is planned . You can achieve smoother skin

The pre-operative visit, the intervention and the course

The pre-operative phase is essential to know the patient's general health conditions. The latter, subjected to an objective examination by the specialist, has the opportunity to view the corrections on his face through the digital reproduction of photos and to know the techniques used for the operation. In addition to the specialist visit and the program to be followed, the doctor provides the patient with indications regarding the intake of food and the administration of medicines, before and after the surgery. The incisions through which the surgeon performs the mentoplasty do not leave visible marks on the surface, as they take place intraoral and promptly medicated. The swelling, the possible bruising on the face and the resulting slight pain are not disabling but completely normal, they disappear within a few days, through the application of ice on the treated area, and some rules of well-being. In fact, during the first weeks following the operation, the patient must rest and not undergo heavy activities.
